I don’t like Spotify

I just can’t get into it. I briefly played around with Spotify last week, was annoyed by its interface, and gave up. I tried again this morning, but I just can’t do it. I don’t like Spotify because:

  • It looks like iTunes. Some people think that Spotify will succeed because it looks like iTunes (and is thus familiar), but I’ve always thought that iTunes is pretty ugly and non-intuitive.
  • It has a dark theme. I despise white text on any sort of background, whether it’s occurring on an app or a website.
  • It is client-based. I don’t want to (and often can’t) download their client to every computer I use, and I just need more flexibility.
  • It has an ugly iOS app.

I’ve also recently tried Rdio and Mog. Mog has a huge catalogue, with an awesome radio feature, but again, I can’t stand their interface (current or beta or iOS app). Rdio is missing some of the music that I want, but its website and iOS app are just so damn pretty and easy to use. Rdio and Mog both cost $9.99 a month, so I’m torn. I really want to get into streaming music because I want access to a ton of music that I don’t own and don’t want to buy individually. I guess I’ll hold off on subscribing to any service right now.
