Have I Lost My Canadian Accent Yet?
I have been living in the United States for exactly one year. At times the year flew by, at other times it dragged on endlessly. I want to like living here, but I’m still “homesick.” This city is ideal for many reasons, but it feels like another temporary stop for me.
I lived and grew up in the same city in Ontario until I went away to university, but since then I have moved a lot within Southern Ontario - I have not spent more than one year at a time in any city. Even during university I would spend the summers back in my hometown, and I feel like I’ve had nothing but constant disruption for the last 8 years. I’m tired of moving, but I don’t think I can settle down here. Thankfully I’m not alone in feeling this way, and I think returning to Canada will happen for us….someday.
