WNY and So. Ontario - Early 90s Playlist
The first thing I did when I got Spotify was create a list of songs from artists of the Western New York and Southern Ontario area from around the early 90s. I tried to keep to bands from that area as much as possible, but occasionally I may have strayed a bit. There’s an interesting mix of artists here - some went on to be huge (Sarah McLachlan, Goo Goo Dolls), some bands didn’t last much longer (10,000 Maniacs, 13 Engines), and some enjoyed primarily regional success (Lowest of the Low, The Tragically Hip). The styles are also quite eclectic - some heavy, some folky, some goofy - but all quite unique. So if you’re interested in the music of that time period and think that the only real scene was Seattle, listen to this playlist.
- Bad Time To Be Poor - Rheostatics
- Grace, Too - The Tragically Hip

This is why I love your blog Pete - you always take me to a place in myself that I haven’t visited in years. I don’t have many fond memories of my teenage years (the 90s), but the ones I do have are tied to music - especially the radio. I would cling to my little cheap-o boombox, creating mixed tapes or listening to talk radio.
It was around this time that I also started developing an interest in all things America, due to my close proximity to Western New York, spending a lot of time there as a kid, and later, having my brother move to the US in the mid-90s. I told myself that I would one day live in the US too, and here I am.
These may seem like two unrelated thoughts, but in my mind they are tied together. To this day I still have an affinity for basic AM/FM radio…and I Mother Earth.
